Sustainable cardboard binder replaces plastic

The packaging from Swiss branding agency Keim Identity is made entirely from cardboard and in almost all cases no adhesive is used. The latest development is a flexible tape made of tear-resistant cardboard, including a resealable cardboard closure, which replaces conventional cable ties.

Keim Identity has been a pioneer in sustainable packaging since 2006: the agency has already conceptualised and designed over a hundred innovative sustainable packaging solutions. Growing customer demand and new developments submitted to the patent office have led to sustainable packaging now being recognised as a business unit. Keim Packaging is managed.

Sophisticated folding technologies, ingenious closures, innovative product fixings and plastic-free hangers enable customised solutions for a wide range of different products. In most cases Keim Packaging's solutions have replaced blister packaging, packaging with plastic parts or glued packaging. They are one hundred per cent recyclable.

The cable tie has all too often proved to be a piece de resistance in packaging. The packaging team's ambition was therefore to replace even the last piece of plastic. After countless moulds and mechanisms had already been developed for product packaging, came up with the idea of developing a „cardboard binder“. A great deal of ingenuity and optimisation has led to the successful development of the cardboard alternative: Keim Packaging's latest product is called k-fix and is a flexible cardboard strap made of tear-resistant cardboard with a resealable cardboard closure. Like a belt, the length can be varied before fixing.

There are various alternatives for the use of k-fix. It can be connected to a carrier carton as a loose element or function as an integral part of the packaging. Even relatively heavy items such as bicycle stands or tool sets can be tightly fastened with k-fix. Until now, Keim Packaging has had a strong focus on the outdoor sector.

„If we can help to reduce plastic in packaging in product areas such as tools, sanitary products, building supplies, etc., then we will have achieved our goal.“
