Sustainable e-commerce packaging at mymuesli

mymuesli and Smurfit Kappa have worked together to optimise packaging so that less waste is generated by e-commerce packaging. The result is material savings and an increased transport volume.

Mymuesli and Smurfit Kappa are working together to minimise packaging waste in the e-commerce sector. The resulting packaging not only saves packaging waste, but also achieves a higher transport volume per lorry.

The former online start-up mymuesli has become a pioneer in individualised organic food and now ships its product range to 9 European countries. In doing so, the company pursues a clear Sustainability strategy for low-emission and low-packaging shipping options play an important role.

Conversion of the shipping system

In order to more sustainable in the shipping sector, the company analysed and reorganised its entire packaging system in 2020/21. The Previous manual dispatch of customer orders with prefabricated cardboard boxes and adhesive tape was not only labour-, material- and time-intensive for mymuesli, but also allowed little flexibility to respond to individual customer orders. The company was also looking for new ways to reduce damage to the product packaging during the delivery process.

In co-operation with Smurfit Kappa mymuesli analysed all shipping-related processes and work steps - starting with the folding of the shipping cartons and the packaging of various breakfast products through to the gluing and shipping itself. It became apparent that significant optimisation potential along this entire packaging and shipping process exist.

„Analysing the processes at mymuesli revealed that packaging by hand is no longer efficient given the now high demand for mymuesli products and that economies of scale are not fully noticeable. We therefore suggested investing in a modern packaging machine. With this solution, mymuesli will be able to Save costs as well as packaging and additional materials."

From manual to automated packaging

An innovative solution was chosen: the CPV-Everest packaging machine from Sparck Technologies, a high-speed packaging machine for continuous corrugated board with a capacity of 1,100 packs per hour for multiple or single order items. The CVP-Everest is an automated solution that produces customised packaging thanks to an integrated 3D scanner. It is a suitable solution for e-commerce companies that are faced with increasing order volumes and labour shortages. Thanks to a special base-lid design, the machine also offers a single-material solution with hot glue, which allows the carton to be opened via a perforation in the cardboard. This eliminates the need for adhesive tape to seal the carton.

„Smurfit Kappa's extensive experience in the packaging sector helped us to make the right decision. However, this resulted not only in a Long-term investment in greener value chains, but also offers rapid amortisation.“

Savings on packaging material

In spring 2021, mymuesli's innovative packaging unit was put into operation on the German market for the first time. The savings achieved are considerable: 20 per cent packaging material for the carton and filling material that is no longer needed are avoided. In addition, the corrugated board offcuts can be returned to the Smurfit Kappa plant in Feucht for the production of new corrugated board, resulting in further material savings of around 30 per cent.

By reducing the volume and optimally adapting parcel sizes to the shipping contents, up to 30 per cent more parcels in a lorry load. At the same time, as a side effect of the customised package formats, the risk of products being damaged during transport is reduced. In addition, 13,500 rolls of adhesive tape per year can be dispensed with. Equally important: during seasonal or marketing-specific shipping peaks, such as in the run-up to Christmas or Black Friday, mymuesli increase its capacity thanks to an automated packaging line. This example shows that increased sustainability targets and investments in innovative technologies go hand in hand.
