
Nordsee's previous plastic and aluminium packaging for the to-go business is now being replaced by an environmentally friendly alternative. Thimm produces the snack boxes from „ComBa“ paper with a sustainable water-based coating. Consumers can dispose of the packaging in the waste paper bin.
Nordsee GmbH offers fish specialities in over 350 branches throughout Germany for consumption on site and outside the home. In order to transport baguettes, burgers and other specialities safely and in an environmentally friendly way, the company has decided to use Thimm turned to: The aim of the packaging development was to, Sustainable alternatives to existing aluminium and plastic packaging to find.

The „ComBa“ papers for the production of corrugated board for direct food contact, so-called foodWave, are Free from emulsifiers and solvents and provide reliable protection against liquids and grease. The snack boxes are currently produced in two sizes for the restaurant chain, so that all types of burgers, baguettes, burritos or wraps can be accommodated.

The snack boxes also benefit from good printability, as the small corrugation creates a flat surface. The printing was carried out using flexographic post-printing. The boxes are stackable and have retractable flaps to allow vapour to escape.
Sustainable developments

Thimm has developed a three-part box for out-of-home dishes, such as plaice fillet with potatoes and remoulade sauce: it consists of a printed lid flap box for the fish and variable 1/2 and 1/4 trays for side dishes and sauces. The boxes are also made from foodWave in F-flute corrugated cardboard, while the inner trays are also made from „ComBa“ barrier-coated paper. The trays can also be used to reheat meals in the microwave.
After use, consumers can return the new packaging via the Add the waste paper bin to the paper cycle. This turns the sustainable packaging into a circular product from which paper can be produced again. In addition to new take-away trays with integrated drinks holders, which are also currently being produced by Thimm, the next joint developments for heat-resistant packaging are already in the starting blocks.
