The best cardboard packaging 2024

Pro Carton has now honoured the best cartonboard packaging on the market with this year's European Carton Excellence Award in Berlin.

On 19 September 2024, the winners of the European Carton Excellence Award 2024 were announced at a festive gala at the Jewish Museum Berlin. We show you all the packaging that was honoured by the jury. 

The prestigious prize, which is awarded by Per Carton and the European Carton Makers Association, is regarded as the most important Award for sustainable packaging in Europe. Every year, the award honours outstanding innovations in the field of cartonboard and folding carton design.

The jury, consisting of leading industry experts such as Satkar Giddar, Sanjeev Das (Unilever) and Lotte Krekels (Carrefour), had already selected the 27 top candidates for the Public Vote and all the winners in advance. The award ceremony not only recognises the Creativity and functionality of the designs, but also their contribution to more Sustainability in the packaging industry.

The winners of the Pro Carton Young Designer Award and the Pro Carton Student Video Award were also honoured.

Carton of the Year 2024:
Origen Flor Natural

The coveted Carton of the Year Award went to the Spanish packaging board converter Hinojosa Packaging Galería Gráfica and the board manufacturer Stora Enso for Origen Flor Natural, a creation for Laboratorios Flor Natural Parfums SL. The award-winning design is characterised by sophisticated die-cut patterns that make the product more attractive on the shelf while ensuring optimum protection of the glass perfume bottle.

Public Award:
Pladis Victoria Creations

The exceptional functional design of the Pladis Victoria Creations-packaging received over 300 votes and thus secured the Public Award 2024. the packaging for McVitie's Victoria Chocolate Creations made of cardboard from Metsä Board combines visual appeal with practical functionality.

Their festive look and convenient opening mechanism ensure an optimal unwrapping experience. The well thought-out details and compatibility with existing production processes make them a perfect choice for consumers and the brand.

Innovation Award:
OCB Cover Kit - Paper & Filter

That with the Innovation Award excellent OCB Cover Kit - Paper & Filter the Alzamora Group is a convincing example of problem-solving and sustainable packaging design. Metsä Board's compact and reusable cardboard packaging is a practical solution that minimises unnecessary waste. Avoids packaging waste and items that are traditionally packaged and sold separately.

The Mono-material construction and the sturdy design of the pack ensure durability and product protection, while the convenient size and easy refillability make it a user-friendly choice for tobacco users.

Sustainability Award:
Calma Products

Calma Products was honoured for its innovative packaging concept with the Sustainability Award was honoured. The new packaging, which was developed in collaboration with cardboard converter PAWI Packaging Deutschland GmbH and cardboard manufacturer Sappi Germany GmbH is characterised by recyclable materials, a user-friendly design and optimised product protection.

Features such as a click-and-open mechanism, a Hinged shelf hanger and a transparent window give the environmentally friendly packaging alternative added value. The product-protecting packaging is a safe and sustainable option for new parents.

General Packaging - Virgin Fibre:
Samarité / Magic Key / Candy Set Devine Cream & Mini Supreme Cleanser 2023

Samarité / Magic Key / Candy Set Divine Cream & Mini Supreme Cleanser 2023 received the award at the awards gala for General Packaging - Virgin Fibre. The luxurious cosmetics gift box, customised by PAWI Packaging Poland Sp. z o.o. and manufactured by Billerud for Zeme Pharm, is characterised by a sophisticated design with soft-touch varnish, gold hot stamping and CMYK/Pantone printing on both sides.

General Packaging - Recycled Fibre:
Easy-Life Fish Food

Easy-Life Fish Food was awarded the trophy in the category General Packaging - Recycled Fibre awarded. The innovative, plastic-free packaging, which is processed by Snel BV and Smurfit Kappa Hoya combines cardboard and paper to create a fully recyclable solution. The special design effectively eliminates fish food odours and provides consumers with a pleasant freshness experience.

Food and Drink Packaging - Virgin Fibre:
Mackmyra 001

The sleek, minimalist packaging for Mackmyra 001, a Swedish malt whisky, is an example of understated elegance and was awarded the prize for Food and Drink Packaging - Virgin Fibre awarded. Designed by Nordic Carton AB and produced by Holmen Board and Paper The container's refined, Nordic-inspired style emphasises simplicity and functionality. The sleek mechanism provides a sophisticated user experience and reflects the brand's commitment to stylish aesthetics combined with classic elements.

Food and Drink Packaging - Recycled Fibre:
Cluster-Clip Kirkland Branded Marinara Sauce

Cluster clip Kirkland Branded Marinara Sauce won the prize in Berlin in the category Food & Drink - Recycled Fibre. The innovative packaging solution, which was designed and manufactured by WestRock, uses fibre-based cardboard clips instead of conventional shrink wrap. It is fully recyclable and allows retailers to optimise branding thanks to customisation options. The packaging offers a stronger, more durable approach to protecting the product during transport in the supply chain.
