The international Thimm Group, which includes the packaging manufacturer Thimm Packaging in Všetaty (Czech Republic), is continuously investing in the modernisation and development of its plants. Investments totalling CZK 276 million (EUR 7.5 million) are currently being made at the Czech site. A new centre for folder gluers (FKM) for the production of highly functional corrugated cardboard packaging and a large warehouse are being built there. The official inauguration took place at the end of February.

Manufacturer of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and online retail require sophisticated packaging constructions that are made from several parts or different types of corrugated cardboard and have tear strips, perforations or reinforcements. Thimm Packaging has specialised in these types of packaging in particular. The Všetaty site is therefore currently building a FKM Competence Centre. The company is investing 1.2 million euros in the third, completely new, centrally computer-controlled Folding carton gluing machine with equipment that is unique on the Czech market. The centre for folder gluers will be fully operational in April 2017.

In one production run

Packaging that was previously considered very complicated and challenging to produce, as it had to pass through several machines, can now be easily produced on a single machine in a single production run at Thimm Packaging. Special components of the gluing machine are units for gluing silicone strips into the packaging. These function as double-sided adhesive strips and are used, for example, for the practical sealing of packaging for online retail.

Another option for sealing packaging is to apply adhesive, which is covered with a strip that can be peeled off as required (for example, when resealing packaging for returns). Conversely, easy opening of the packaging - at the point of sale (POS) or at the recipient of the consignment - is made possible by an adhesive strip. Tear strip which is already incorporated into the packaging at the FKM. The so-called „wrap rage“, i.e. the frustration of the consumer with packaging that is difficult to open, is thus avoided.

Presence at the point of sale

Especially for Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP), emphasis is placed on the visibility of the goods on the shelf. The front of the packaging should be as open as possible. The new machine makes it possible to reduce the edge of the so-called „U“ cut-out to 35 millimetres. This means that the products are only minimally concealed by the edge, but are still held securely in the packaging.

With an area of around 11,500 square metres, Thimm Packaging's new warehouse offers space for up to 15,000 pallets and replaces the previous warehouse in Úžice, 20 kilometres away. This eliminates a superfluous intermediate link on the way to customers. By having its own warehouse, the company is optimising its logistics flows and orders can be processed more quickly. Last but not least, CO2 emissions will be reduced as the journeys between Všetaty and Úžice (approx. 115,000 kilometres per year) will no longer be necessary.
