Despite a good first half of the year, the mood among manufacturers of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans is tense. The industry is concerned about exploding gas prices.

You could actually be satisfied. The first half of 2022 was quite good for the industry. Demand for aluminium tubes picked up again and demand for aluminium aerosol cans increased significantly. And yet the mood is extremely tense.

But first the good news: At Aluminium tubes demand from the pharmaceutical market in particular ensured good figures. As orders from the cosmetics and food sectors also developed positively, the market for aluminium tubes remained stable overall at the previous year's level.

Aluminium aerosol cans even recorded double-digit growth due to a significant increase in demand for deodorants and hair care products. However, overall volumes are still below the pre-corona level. Overall, deodorants account for around 60 percent of total deliveries of aluminium aerosol cans to Germany.

Gas levy creates additional burdens

In addition to the ongoing difficult situation on the markets for transport services, which is putting the security of supply in the industry to the test, developments on the energy and, in particular, the gas market are causing great concern among German aluminium packaging manufacturers.

The gas levy of 2.419 cents per kilowatt hour that will take effect in Germany from October 2022, which represents a distortion of competition to the disadvantage of German manufacturers, will result in considerable additional costs for domestic producers of aluminium packaging, according to Johannes Schick, Chairman of the Tubes, Cans and Extrusions Association at Aluminium Deutschland.

An additional burden could result from the planned reduction in gas consumption by around 20 per cent.

„However, if consumer sentiment and demand on the markets for fast-moving consumer goods deteriorate in the long term due to the difficult economic conditions, the situation could worsen over the course of the second half of the year,“ summarises Schick.
