Together with the company Trikora Deutschland, the city of Tübingen has introduced a reusable system for pizza packaging. The blue polypropylene deposit boxes are now available in various catering establishments in the city for a deposit of five euros.
A packaging tax has been in force in Tübingen since the beginning of 2022. It must be paid by outlets selling disposable packaging, crockery and cutlery that serve food and drinks for immediate consumption or takeaway. The tax is intended to bring money into the municipal budget, counteract littering in the city and strengthen reusable systems. Now the city is going one step further in terms of reusability and is introducing reusable boxes for pizza.
„I am delighted that Tübingen is once again taking on a pioneering role when it comes to reusable packaging and that there is now an innovative alternative for pizza boxes. In addition to the packaging tax and the established reusable systems for food and drinks, the pizza box is a further step towards protecting the environment and reducing the amount of waste in the city.“
Boris Palmer, Lord Mayor of Tübingen
The blue reusable pizza boxes are Made from dishwasher-safe polypropylene and initially available in selected businesses, where they will also be returned. Pizza boxes are still available - for 50 cent packaging tax.
