For the universal remote control One For All from Universal Electronics Inc (UEI), packaging is the most important means of communication in retail. As the devices are produced at various locations in China, packaging sourcing is available directly on site - managed by STI Asia Pacific, the Asian subsidiary of the STI Group.

The performance of a remote control, the number of controllable devices and the technology used - UEI communicates all of this via the different packaging variants they have in use. The devices themselves are installed at different locations produced in China, The products are packaged there and distributed worldwide, with marketing and sales for Europe being managed from Holland.

„Appliances stand for the highest quality. Our packaging must express this promise. For our premium models, we rely on high-quality finished folding boxes with matt and gloss effects and foil embossing.”
Thomas Hascher, Product Marketing Manager at UEI

For the development and production of its packaging, UEI was therefore looking for a partner with a high level of development expertise, knowledge of the European markets and production sites in Europe and China.

„In the STI Group, we have found the perfect partner for our requirements. The STI Asia Pacific team develops new designs for us locally, which we can coordinate directly with our production facilities. They also work with audited partners to ensure high-quality realisation that meets the requirements of the European markets. It is important that the remote controls are optimally protected in the packaging, are not scratched and are presented in a visually appealing way together with the operating instructions.”
Thomas Hascher, Product Marketing Manager at UEI

Focus on sustainability

At the same time, UEI attaches great importance to Sustainable solutions. The insert for the latest product, the streamer, was therefore realised entirely in corrugated cardboard. This has also convinced Walmart and BestBuy. After initially being sold primarily in the UK and Germany, the device will also be listed in the USA from the autumn.

For the designers of the STI Group, developing sustainable solutions is part of everyday practice. The fact that the locations and design centres have been FSC certified underlines this claim. This is a major advantage for UEI, as trading partners are increasingly demanding proof that the paper used comes from sustainable forestry.

The same applies to the realisation of mono-material solutions. As the products are preferably placed hanging, plastic hangers are currently part of all packaging, but we are continuing to work on sustainable solutions.
