The IK question and answer catalogue (FAQ) on „oxo-degradable“ plastics, which has been available since 2017, is now available in an updated version.

The FAQ document summarises and answers the following key questions, among others:

  • What are „oxo-degradable“ plastics?
  • Are „oxo-degradable“ plastics bioplastics?
  • Do „oxo-degradable“ plastics hinder recycling?
  • Are there legal requirements for „oxo-degradable“ plastics?
  • Can ecological goals be achieved with the use of „oxo-degradable“ plastics?

Due to current developments in legal regulations, such as the requirements in the EU „Single Use Plastic“ Directive to ban articles made from so-called „oxo-degradable“ plastics, the IK document was revised by the IK Bioplastics Working Group. In addition, it was revised with new studies and statements from various institutions. This means that information and statements on oxo-degradable plastics are available in a summarised form.

The new version of this document is available in German and English and can be downloaded from the IK website free of charge to download available:
