UPM Specialty Papers and Paramelt have jointly developed a new bio- and paper-based packaging concept for food. This solution offers a strong fat barrier and improved end-of-life performance, making it particularly suitable for applications in the bakery, fast food, and convenience sectors.

The new concept combines UPM's barrier papers with Paramelt's bio-based heat-seal and barrier technology. The result is a recyclable paper-based solution that offers both the necessary grease barrier and the sealing performance for food applications. The individual components have also been validated as home compostable.

Christiane Laine, Senior Researcher at UPM Innovation, highlights the challenges involved in achieving grease resistance at low coating weights. „Our collaboration with Paramelt allows us to offer a bio-based packaging concept with strong grease barrier properties and proven performance on packaging lines,“ explains Laine.

Efficient integration into existing production lines

The concept uses UPM Solide Lucent or UPM Prego papers, specifically developed as a base for barrier coatings, in combination with Paramelt Aquavate Bio SB 2383, a water-based coating made entirely of biodegradable components. These materials together create a functional packaging solution suitable for a variety of foods, including baked goods, grab-and-go products, and other dry or greasy goods.

Leon Krings, Business Development Manager at Paramelt, highlights that brand owners and converters are looking for scalable technologies that can be easily integrated into existing production environments. „Aquavate Bio SB 2383 is a bio-based and biodegradable coating, developed for reliable performance on standard coating processes and existing converting lines,“ said Krings.
