Together with UPM Specialty Papers, Royal Vaassen has developed new fibre-based barrier papers for food and consumer goods packaging. According to the manufacturer, the solutions presented under the name Barryrwrap offer recyclability, protective functions and application options for existing production lines.
With a view to the upcoming EU packaging regulation (PPWR), the project is focussing on materials that can be processed in established paper and cardboard recycling structures. According to Royal Vaassen, the barrier papers cover requirements ranging from medium to very high protection classes, for example against oxygen and moisture.
Alternative to laminates and aluminium foils
„Our barrier papers are a sustainable alternative to laminates and plastics. They offer a high level of product protection with a focus on recyclability and can be processed on existing lines - for coffee, broth or chocolate, for example,“ explains Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager at Royal Vaassen.
Barryrwrap Everest was developed for applications that require maximum protection, such as instant coffee. According to the company, it offers barriers against moisture, oxygen and light, high print quality and is fully recyclable - making it a recyclable alternative to aluminium laminates.
Base: UPM Solide Lucent
UPM Solide Lucent packaging paper is used as the base material. It is smooth, dense and at the same time stable, so that low coating weights are sufficient and efficient processing on high-speed systems is possible, according to the company. Different grammages are available depending on the application.
UPM is also testing the barrier paper solutions in new application areas, including fibre-based can formats for crisps or powdered drinks. Samples of such packaging will be available in September at the Fachpack in Nuremberg presented.
