According to the new „Packaging State of the Industry“ report by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the US market will reach a volume of USD 11.3 billion in 2024. Moderate growth of 2.2 per cent is forecast for 2025. In Canada, the market was worth USD 1.2 billion with almost stable growth of 0.8 per cent.
Machine manufacturers are under pressure to develop compact systems that fit into existing production areas, process sensitive materials gently and are also easy to operate and maintain, according to reports. Key issues include a shortage of skilled labour, rising costs, artificial intelligence, sustainability and the impact of political decisions in the USA.
Focus on practical solutions
According to PMMI, the labour issue remains one of the biggest challenges for OEMs and end users. While automated systems, servo drives and AI-supported functions can help to achieve efficiency gains, many users prefer practical applications for operations. Companies are increasingly investing in employee development programmes.
The picture is also mixed when it comes to maintenance: While predictive maintenance systems are only hesitantly accepted due to the costs and changes in processes, some manufacturers report efficiency gains when these systems provide simple instructions for action via user-friendly interfaces. Traditional preventive maintenance remains a tried and tested approach as it harmonises better with existing processes.
Sustainability and market volatility
Sustainability remains a decisive factor, but the balance between ecological goals and economic feasibility is becoming more important. Added to this are uncertainties caused by tariffs and changes in US regulations, which make long-term planning more difficult.
„End users are increasingly facing challenges due to the high variety of items, innovative packaging formats and the pressure to minimise downtimes,“ explains Jorge Izquierdo, Vice President Market Development at PMMI.
