Since the vaccines against COVID-19 have been available in Germany, vacuum expert Schmalz has seen a noticeable increase in enquiries from the pharmaceutical industry for vacuum technology.

With its vacuum technology for the pharmaceutical industry, Schmalz offers suitable components that safely handle medical products in both automated and manual production processes - for example in the logistics centre of a vaccine manufacturer.

„We offer suction pads with small diameters for blisters, ampoules, syringes or injection vials. Our grippers can, for example, grip small glass containers with vaccines extremely gently and without contamination.“ Dr Maik Fiedler, Head of the Vacuum Automation and Handling business units at J. Schmalz GmbH

At the end of the production line, it's more about the Handling the well-insulated refrigerated crates with the vaccines. These are packed in sturdy cardboard boxes and transported to the vaccination centres. In order to handle these heavy containers ergonomically, Schmalz supplied various vacuum tube lifters from the JumboFlex to a well-known vaccine manufacturer.

„In the logistics centre, one employee often moves a large number of these parcels manually and at high cycle rates,“ explains Fiedler. „Over the course of the day, they carry loads of several hundred kilograms.“ This puts an enormous strain on health, especially on the back. With the vacuum tube lifter he can easily pick up and move these heavy boxes of vaccine doses with one hand.

Vacuum technology in continuous use during the pandemic

„Our vacuum gripping solutions have been a huge success during the pandemic. Frequently in continuous use“, says Fiedler. Typical applications include handling food in distribution centres, gripping medical products or parcels containing protective clothing for hospital staff. „Our products ensure that supply chains function reliably in industries that are often described as systemically relevant,“ emphasises the handling expert. In India, the USA and Germany, Schmalz sites have therefore also been categorised as particularly important for the community.
