Vetropack builds a new plant in Italy

Glass manufacturer Vetropack is investing over CHF 400 million in a new plant for the traditionally important Italian market.

Vetropack Group is investing over CHF 400 million in a new plant for the Italian market. The new high-tech site offers greater flexibility in production with higher capacities and a focus on sustainable processes.

The Italian subsidiary Vetropack Italia S.r.l. has been part of Vetropack Group since 2015. As the previous location in Trezzano sul Naviglio Vetropack's quality and sustainability goals In the long term, the Group decided to build a new production facility in Boffalora sopra Ticino, around 25 kilometres away.

The new, state-of-the-art production plant is being built on the site of the former Reno De Medici paper mill and covers an area of 347,000 square metres, of which 170,000 square metres will be used for the actual production facilities. As in the old plant, two ovens will initially be put into operation. Compared to the previous site, however, the manufacturer expects with an increase in production capacity of around 70 per cent. The infrastructure is geared towards expanding capacity, as Vetropack anticipates a positive market trend in Italy and beyond in the medium term.

All 301 employees at the previous location were offered a transfer. Despite a significant increase in production volume per employee, the workforce will actually continue to grow. New and existing employees have already been trained for the new production facilities from 2020. Production in Boffalora sopra Ticino near Milan is expected to start in the second quarter of 2023.

Customised small series and sustainability

In Boffalora, Vetropack is investing in high-performance and intelligent technologies that enable flexible, customised and resource-saving operations. „Thanks to modern systems and processes, we can produce more flexibly and minimise Increasing demand for high-quality packaging, even in smaller quantities - so-called semi-specials,“ says Christoph Burgermeister, project manager at Vetropack. At the same time, the site is geared towards significantly more sustainable production.

A series of measures will significantly reduce potential environmental pollution. The demolition material from a former paper factory on the same site will be reused in the construction of the new plant. The Production water and waste heat from the blast furnaces are largely reused thanks to circulation systems and emissions are greatly reduced with the aid of state-of-the-art filter systems.
