The packaging machinery industry is regarded as a key sector for sustainable packaging solutions. But how well positioned is the industry really when it comes to topics such as artificial intelligence, automation and the new EU packaging regulation (PPWR)? In our interview at the German Packaging Congress 2025, we talk to Martin Buchwitz, Managing Director of Packaging Valley, about the current challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

The political framework and regulatory requirements are rapidly changing the packaging industry. The new EU packaging regulation has only been in force for a few weeks, but many companies are struggling with uncertainties. Packaging machinery manufacturing is often neglected in the public debate - yet it is a decisive factor for innovation and sustainable solutions.

Another key topic of the discussion: artificial intelligence in packaging technology. While many companies are already working with digitalisation and automation, the use of AI directly on the machine is still in its infancy.
👉 „We are perhaps at 5-10 % of the possible potential here - there is still a huge amount of catching up to do, especially in process optimisation.“

But despite all the challenges, Buchwitz believes the industry is well prepared. One thing is more important than new regulations: planning security.
👉 „Regulations are not the problem - uncertainty is. As soon as the requirements are clear, the industry can react to them.“
