Volpak, manufacturer of horizontal form-fill-seal machines, and speciality paper supplier Lecta want to test and validate paper-based packaging materials in a joint project.
The Coesia company Volpak specialises in horizontal form-fill-seal solutions for the packaging industry. Together with Lecta, a European manufacturer and distributor of speciality papers, sustainable materials for packaging applications are to be tested. Both partners want to ensure that environmentally friendly papers can also be used effectively on existing packaging machines and thus fulfil the requirements of modern packaging systems.
Lecta has already launched barrier products that are suitable for a wide range of packaging applications. These include flowpacks, pouches and wrapping materials, such as butter wrappers. The company works combines various barrier properties and heat sealability, to fulfil specific packaging requirements.

Lecta is a leader in the development of speciality papers and graphic papers that meet the most diverse industrial requirements. The company has utilised its technological expertise and production capacities to develop new Functional metallised, uncoated and coated one-sided papers with barrier properties to develop. These papers are designed to maintain environmentally friendly properties while providing important protective functions such as barriers against water vapour, grease, oxygen and alcohol. These papers are recyclable and can be processed in the usual paper recycling loops, which is in line with the principles of a circular economy.
The main focus of the joint project is to test how sustainable papers from Lecta can be used in flexible packaging. The potential applications cover various areas and also extend to food, including cups.
Tests in Volpak's pouch laboratory
In this project, Volpak is carrying out tests in its „Pouch Lab“ to evaluate the performance of the materials in real-life scenarios. The in-house research and development facility is used to assess the processability and durability of new materials. In the Pouch Lab, Volpak can simulate real production conditions to ensure that the environmentally friendly papers can be seamlessly integrated into existing packaging processes without compromising efficiency or quality.
