Binding minimum quotas for post-consumer recyclates will apply in the EU from 2030 - but there is already a shortage of high-quality PCR today. A recent study commissioned by Interzero shows a looming supply gap of around 1 million tonnes. The new EU packaging regulation (PPWR) obliges all distributors to fulfil specified recyclate quotas from 2030. At the same time, companies are already reporting bottlenecks, price increases and long waiting times, particularly for food-grade PCR. A study commissioned by Interzero clearly shows that even under optimistic assumptions, Europe is heading for a recyclate gap of around one million tonnes.
