PET trays from the Yellow Bag become new WC fresheners

The baskets of the „Frosch“ brand WC fresheners will soon be made of recycled plastic material that comes directly from the Yellow Bag. That is the goal of a cooperation project as part of the Werner & Mertz Recyclate Initiative.

The baskets of the „Frosch“ brand WC fresheners will soon be made of recycled plastic material that comes directly from the Yellow Bag. That is the goal of a cooperation project as part of the Werner & Mertz Recyclate Initiative.

Already now Werner & Mertz the brackets for the WC freshener made from recycled plastic. This is made from PET bottles are produced, according to the cleaning agent manufacturer. However, the aim is to recycle more used plastic from the household collection in the Yellow Bag.

Cooperation project for better utilisation of yellow bag waste

In order to come closer to this goal, a Co-operation project with Der Grüne Punkt and its sister companies Dannemann Global Extrusion and Bernese plastics technology. The aim: in future, the WC freshness baskets are to be made from recycled PET trays from the Yellow Bag can be produced.

Trays from PET film are mainly used for packaging foodstuffs. In the Yellow bag many of these PET trays can be found. However, they have mostly been incinerated up to now. Recycling them is considered problematic because they are often Multilayer packaging is not a problem. Furthermore, there are hardly any buyers for the resulting secondary raw materials.

Food PET trays are sorted by type

The prerequisite for being able to recycle the PET trays is a Changing the sorting process with the Green Dot. Previously, monolayer PET packaging was not separated from multilayer packaging. Everything went into the incinerator together. Now the different types of packaging are sorted separately and fully automatically. This provides the waste recyclers with a certain amount of high-quality PET trays. These trays are then recycled into Flakes processed and sorted.

„Together with Werner & Mertz, we have once again succeeded in closing the loop for a recyclable material that was previously unavailable for recycling.“
Dr Markus Helftewes, Managing Director Der Grüne Punkt

Dannemann Global Extrusion then produces the raw film directly from the flakes, from which Berner Kunststofftechnik then moulds the toilet bowls. This not only consists of PET trays, but also falls into this category itself and is fully recyclable after use. In a further Waste sorting there would be a chance that the used toilet bowls could be reprocessed into flakes from which new toilet bowls could be made.
