The Wetropa Packaging Group, manufacturer of customised transport and industrial packaging, is expanding its foothold in the packaging industry and has invested in a system for the production of honeycomb cardboard panels.

In order to set the course for the future, a new, 40 metre long, ultra-modern and energy-efficient plant has now been built at the site in Mörfelden at a cost of around two million euros. The new manufacturing process produces PaperCore cardboard panels with a honeycomb structure. The company is thus aligning itself with the increasing requirements in the area of sustainable packaging.

The new machine was purchased to produce customised paper packaging with an innovative honeycomb structure. In contrast to conventional corrugated cardboard PaperCore offers exceptional stability and is also sustainable - the material is 100 per cent recyclable and around two thirds lighter than a comparable corrugated cardboard solution. The introduction of this customised honeycomb paper packaging complements Wetropa Packaging's existing product range, as it goes through the same existing sales, development and production processes.

Paper trilaminate

The honeycomb panel from which this packaging is made is a trilaminate consisting of a honeycomb core between an outer and inner cover. The height and cell width of the honeycomb panel are variable and define its stability. With this new product, the packaging group aims to fulfil the requirements of its customers even better and offer further sustainable packaging solutions.

„We are investing a significant proportion of our turnover in advanced and sustainable technology. This new acquisition is an important part of our investment strategy, it helps to secure our competitiveness and catapults us to the next level of our sustainability strategy, which we have been pursuing in a targeted manner since 2019. The Wetropa Group is also moving from a processor to a producer. Thanks to the synergies between the two product segments ReFoam and the new RePaper, our packaging group is able to offer the full range of packaging solutions for fragile and surface-sensitive products - in a sustainable and resource-saving manner.“

Dirk Breitkreuz, CEO of the Wetropa Group

The Wetropa Group's packaging specialists develop and produce sustainable packaging on an area of around 17,000 square metres. made of foam or honeycomb panels in several production steps by cutting, punching, milling, welding or gluing and labelling. „Placing and integrating the new machine and its processes into the current machinery was a challenging task, which we managed well thanks to detailed planning and preparation,“ reports Sebastian Lindner, COO of Wetropa Packaging.
