The best carton packaging on the market has now been honoured with this year's European Carton Excellence Award in Seville. We show you all the packaging that was honoured by the jury. 

The three-dimensional, spherical packaging solution from the Spanish Alzamora Group for the cosmetics brand GERnétic was named Carton of the Year, while the innovative fibre-based Boardio(tm) packaging from Graphic Packaging International for Perfetti Van Melle Mentos chewing gum won over consumers at the Public Award and also received the Sustainability Award for sustainability.

All ECEA entries were assessed according to various criteria, including graphic and structural design, production techniques, cost efficiency, ecology, sustainability, innovation, safety and consumer friendliness.

The young talent competitions were also awarded Pro Carton Young Designers Award and Pro Carton Student Video Award 2023.

Carton of the Year 2023:
GERnétic from the Alzamora Group

The winning entry for Carton of the Year combines luxury with a special structural design. The Alzamora Group produced the Elegant GERnétic packaging from a single piece of virgin fibre board from Stora Enso. It protects the product and at the same time acts as an attractive gift presentation.

The jury commented on the Carton of the Year award as follows: „GERnétic is expertly designed packaging“It takes a lot of skill to create a three-dimensional spherical shape from a single piece of cardboard without using glue. A perfect example of how you can achieve extraordinary results with cardboard."

Public Award and Sustainability Award:
Boardio(tm) for Perfetti Van Melle Mentos chewing gum from Graphic Packaging International

The from Graphic Packaging International developed Boardio(tm) packaging based on fibre, which received both the Public Award and the Sustainability Award, represents a significant milestone in the confectionery industry.

The innovative design - made from virgin fibre cardboard from Holmen Iggesund and Stora Enso - is based on the concept of a carton bottle for the confectionery category. The jury welcomed this pioneering step, with which the confectionery giant is emphasising its commitment to Reduction of its ecological footprint proves it.

Innovation Award: Mary Cohr by Edelmann Group

Recent regulations to reduce the use of plastics such as cling film in premium beauty products prompted the Edelmann Group for the development of Mary Cohr. It received the coveted Innovation Award thanks to the special Opening mechanismthe Tamper resistance guaranteed. The packaging was designed with Sappi virgin fibre board manufactured.

The sophisticated packaging eliminates the need for a film sleeve thanks to its coloured dot system on each flap, offering protection while increasing shelf appeal. „It will define the future of tamper-evident packaging and help eliminate the need for non-recyclable packaging,“ said the jury.

General Packaging Virgin Fibre Award:
Dainese Packaging Kit Replacement from Lucaprint

Lucaprint received the General Packaging Virgin Fibre Award for its Dainese Packaging Kit Replacement. With the use of Stora Enso Lucaprint developed a special packaging solution for three types of its sports protection replacement products with a fresh, minimalist look. According to the jury, the Intelligent packaging „can be easily transported by post and is also environmentally friendly as no glue is used, so it can be easily recycled“.

General Packaging Recycled Fibre Award:
ECOCLIC® from Van Genechten Packaging

The ECOCLIC® folding box from Van Genechten Packaging for Procter & Gamble won the General Packaging Recycled Fibre Award, successfully proving that Sustainability and practicality do not have to be mutually exclusive. This innovative design made from recycled cardboard from MM BOARD & PAPER successfully meets the challenge of replacing plastic packaging with a sustainable alternative.

The ECOCLIC® design not only optimises logistics by being supplied flat and pre-glued, but also consists of from only two components, the tray and the cap to reduce supply chain complexity. In addition, the clever integration of the child-resistant closure provides a reassuring „click“ of confirmation when closing the pack.

Food & Drink Virgin Fibre Award :
KEVAS - RHUM ARRANGÉ from Posson Packaging

The rum cube case for KEVAS - RHUM ARRANGÉ from Posson Packaging is, according to the jury, „an impressive concept for perfect and elegant product presentation - and it tells a story about the contents at the same time“. The packaging that won the Food & Drink Virgin Fibre Award is made entirely of FOLBB virgin fibre cartonboard and offers space for up to four glass bottles of rum. The design features multiple displays of plastic-free windows and distinctive communication options to meet the needs of brands, retailers and consumers.

Food & Drink Recycled Fibre Award:
McDonald's delivery sleeve from Huhtamaki

The McDonald's delivery sleeve, developed by Huhtamaki with the use of recycled MM BOARD & PAPER-cardboard, won the Food & Drink Recycled Fibre Award. The innovative and effective solution for the delivery of McDelivery products is „creative, fresh, sustainable and guarantees a safe, hygienically perfect delivery“.

This year's winners have created cutting-edge packaging solutions for products that resonate with consumers who now prioritise sustainability when buying products.

Pro Carton Student Video Award 2023

This award emphasises the importance of promoting young talent in the film industry and supports environmentally conscious solutions. The students had the task of creating a short film showing the advantages and benefits of cartonboard and folding cartons. demonstrated in an imaginative, visionary way.

This year's winner of the Pro Carton Student Video Award 2023 was The PRO's of Carton, shot and edited by Jasmin Hein and Sofia Rohnefeld from the Höhere Graphische Bundes- Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Austria.

Audience Award: More than a third of the votes went to the winner of the Pro Carton Student Video Award 2023 Public Award Diana Morgacheva from the Italian Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi for her video ‚Metamorphosis: A Carton Story

The winning entry for the Pro Carton Student Video Award 2023 Highly Commended was ‚The Circle of Life by the students Ulrike Rösch, Lea Schneiderbanger, Nele Wolff, Felicia Spiegler and Alina Biesolt from the SRH Berlin School of Design and Communication in Germany.

The video shows the many uses of cardboard in different phases of life. The story follows the development of the main character from childhood to old age, in which cardboard continues to play an important role in finding an identity thanks to its durability and recyclability.
