International Paper (IP) is planning to build a new sustainable packaging facility in Rankin County, Mississippi. The $225 million investment will increase production capacity and efficiency.
The demand for sustainable packaging solutions is rising globally, and companies are being challenged to adapt their production processes accordingly. International Paper has announced the construction of a new facility in Rankin County, Mississippi, specialising in sustainable packaging. This decision is part of the company's strategic growth plans and aims to increase operational efficiency and create long-term value.
Modernisation of production infrastructure
Following a comprehensive review of production sites, the board of International Paper has approved the development of this $225 million project. The new facility will be built on an 80-acre site, just a few miles from the existing facility in Richland. This change of location is intended not only to optimise the cost structure but also to improve product quality and supply chain reliability, they state.
The new facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, maximising safety and efficiency for employees. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2026, with production expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2027. Employees from the existing facility in Richland are to transfer to the new site upon completion.
Economic Impacts on Mississippi
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves welcomed the investment as a significant economic win for the state. He emphasised that the project will create new opportunities for Mississippians and further drive the region's economic expansion. Noel Daniels, Chair of the Rankin First Economic Development Authority, stated that International Paper's decision to locate in Rankin County positions the region as a leading hub for industrial innovation in Mississippi and the Southeastern United States.
Focus on sustainability
International Paper aims to create added value, both economically and environmentally, through the new facility. The modern infrastructure is intended to help reduce energy consumption and increase the efficiency of production processes. This aligns with the company's commitment to sustainable packaging solutions that meet the demands of a changing world.
Keith Townsend, Group Vice President and General Manager for IP North America Packaging Solutions East, emphasised that the investment in modernising the production facilities in Mississippi will improve service quality and provide customers with the best sustainable packaging solutions. This strategic decision underscores International Paper's long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability.
