SIG Combibloc, system provider of carton packaging and solutions for the food and beverage industry, claims to have developed the world's first aseptic carton pack that is 100 % linked to plant-based renewable raw materials.
There are currently a number of global influences shaping the food and beverage industry. Two of the most important demands made by consumers are environmentally friendly products and sustainable packaging. Markus Boehm, Chief Market Officer at SIG Combibloc: „Brands with a demonstrable commitment to sustainability record significantly higher sales increases than brands without. These factors were decisive for the development of our SIGNATURE PACKs. This is an important milestone in the field of aseptic packaging and we are proud to be able to respond to consumer demands with this world first.“
The SIGNATURE PACK is driving the replacement of conventional fossil-based plastics with certified, renewable plant-based polymers significantly. The polymers used to coat the raw cardboard and manufacture the closures are certified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) and CMS 71 (TÜV SÜD certification standard) and are based on mass-balanced renewable wood sources from Europe. This means that the polymers used in the SIGNATURE PACK, a corresponding quantity of bio-based raw materials was used in the production of the polymers.
Ace Fung, Global Product Manager at SIG Combibloc: „Developing an aseptic carton pack with 1001TP3 reference to renewable plant-based materials is a major challenge. Aseptic packs have to fulfil higher barrier requirements than packaging for chilled products.“
Way Beyond Good
The SIGNATURE PACK is an important step on the way from SIG, „net-positive“ to become more sustainable. The company is focussing on three core areas in which it can achieve the most for society and the environment. According to SIG Combibloc, responsibility is at the centre of this and determines the way SIG manages the company, how materials are procured and how products are manufactured.
Markus Boehm: „We want to offer the most sustainable packaging solutions available on the market. Up to 82 % of SIG's carton packs are already made from wood, a renewable resource. The SIGNATURE PACK is a logical next step in reducing the use of fossil-based materials and replacing them with plant-based, natural raw materials. We have reached an important milestone on our Way Beyond Good and can offer our customers and consumers around the world a new, more sustainable solution that does more for the environment. It's another world first from SIG.“
