Spanish manufacturer Finca Telena is attracting attention with its special packaging for organic olive oil. It received a „Liderpack Award 2018“ at the Spanish packaging technology trade fair „Hispack“ for its elaborately designed, completely recyclable olive oil bottles made from polyester resin.
Few foods are as synonymous with healthy, light nutrition as Olive oil is the case. In almost every recipe, ambitious cooks are referred to „good olive oil“, for which they are expected to spend a little more. High-quality olive oil is often available in organic quality as a matter of course. It therefore makes sense to ensure that only environmentally friendly materials are used in the packaging design.
The Spanish manufacturer Finca Telena has demonstrated that sophisticated, modern packaging design can also be sustainable with a newly designed range of high-quality organic olive oils. Last year, the company from La Garrovilla in south-west Spain's Extremadura region was honoured with the „Liderpack Awards 2018“ was honoured with an award in the food packaging category. The prize is awarded annually at the Spanish packaging technology trade fair „Hispack“ in cooperation with the organisation „Graphispack“.
Design should support the product
The prize was awarded for the design of the two olive oils „Coupage Cornezuelo-Picual“ and „Manzanilla Cacereña“, as well as another olive oil preparation with the anticidal Colour pigment lycopene. All three packages do not look like conventional olive oil bottles on the supermarket shelf. Instead, they are made from Polyester resin and have a characteristic, recognisable shape and use bold colours. They are also completely recyclable.
The company, which emerged from a traditional finca in Extremadura, also sells conventional olive oils in gourmet quality, explains Finca Telena export manager Marcos del Pozo to the packaging journal. For the new organic product line, on the other hand, a special design was sought: „It was important for us to present all products in a standardised way. The design should support the product.“
Powder coating colours are biodegradable
The experienced delicatessen supplier benefited from its good overview of the market. The decision in favour of the design line was preceded by various visits to international trade fairs. The analyses of the Finca Telena experts led to the new, ultra-modern containers.
His Sustainability claim Finca Telena also pursued this strategy when colouring the bottles. It cooperated with Glasspackaging, a „PIME Special Coatings“ company from Sils/Girona near Lloret de Mar in Spain. A Powder coating process with 100 per cent solvent-free dry particles. Paints for polyester resins in the colours Ral 9016 for white and RAL 3020 for red were used. They consist of biodegradable organic compounds. The harmful emissions would be reduced by 92 per cent, emphasises Glasspackaging.
