Alpla: entered HDPE recycling with takeover

Alpla continues to expand its recycling activities: The acquisition of two companies in Spain marks the company's entry into the recycling of polyolefins.

Alpla, an international manufacturer of plastic packaging solutions, is further expanding its recycling activities: The acquisition of two companies in Spain marks the company's entry into the recycling of polyolefins. 

With two of its own PET recycling plants in Austria and Poland (PET Recycling Team) and joint ventures in Mexico and Germany, Alpla has long been recognised as an established PET recycling company. Partner for PET recycling. The annual capacity of these plants is currently 70,000 tonnes of rPET. Alpla is now taking the next step with the purchase of two HDPE recycling plants.

In October, Alpla signed the purchase agreements for the Acquisition of Suminco S.A. in Montcada and Replacal S.L. in Palencia. Both plants are part of a Spanish family business with more than 35 years of experience in the production of HDPE recyclates.

The annual capacity of the plants with a total of 50 employees is to be expanded to up to 35,000 tonnes. The operational business will continue as before with the existing management. The parties have agreed not to disclose any details.

Availability and high quality

A large proportion of the HDPE recyclates from Suminco and Replacal were previously used in the production of corrugated pipes for sewage systems and other industrial applications. Alpla's aim is to utilise suitable recyclates for the production of packaging.

Circular Economy

In 2018, Alpla signed the Global Commitment of the New Plastics Economy, an initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme. Alpla has set itself the goal of expanding its recycling activities with a planned investment of 50 million euros.

By 2025, all packaging solutions are also to be One hundred per cent recyclable be. The share of processed post-consumer recycled materials in total material use is set to rise to 25 per cent.
