Germany's most sustainable packaging solution honoured

Profol GmbH has received the Special Packaging Award of the German Sustainability Award for its polypropylene board for closing food containers.

Profol GmbH has developed a new product for its polypropylene board for sealing
food containers received the special packaging prize of the German Sustainability Award.

With the CPPeel single-material board for sealing food containers such as yoghurt pots, instant soups or margarine a Environmentally friendly alternative to the currently predominantly used aluminium lids. The lids made of polypropylene are characterised by their lower Energy consumption, better Recyclability and less food loss due to greater puncture resistance. Consumers do not have to separate the lid from the cup for disposal, as was previously the case.

The final also featured a Returnable deposit cup system from FairCup UG and a Compostable plant pot from Fiber Engineering GmbH. The special award for more sustainable product packaging ideas was presented for the first time this year by the German Sustainability Award Foundation together with the REWE Group.

„We didn't make the decision easy for the jury, as many finalists were able to present convincing sustainability concepts. In the end, we were particularly impressed by Profol's closure thanks to its holistic approach in terms of an effective circular economy,“ says Dr Daniela Büchel, Divisional Director REWE Group Retail Germany, Human Resources/Sustainability, on the occasion of the award ceremony.

At the centre of the competition are Market-ready concepts and exemplary ideas, that reduce, optimise or avoid packaging, remain affordable in the mass market and meet consumer needs for hygiene, information and convenience as far as possible.

With five competitions (including the Next Economy Award for „green start-ups“), over 800 applicants and 2,000 guests at the events, the national award for excellence in sustainability in business, local authorities and research is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The prize is awarded by the German Sustainability Award Foundation in cooperation with the German government, leading municipal associations, business associations, civil society organisations and research institutions.
