Metsä Board, European manufacturer of premium fresh fibre paperboard and a Metsä Group company, has used an impressive holographic effect to showcase its Arctic Blue Gin packaging design inspired by the Northern Lights.

The Finnish wine and spirits producer Arctic Brands Group commissioned Metsä Board to design the unusual packaging from the lightweight folding boxboard MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright.

Metsä Board developed the packaging structure, the original graphics and the embossing. For the Northern lights motif printing process is used on Envirofoil, a plastic-free material from the paper processor Hazen with holographic metallisation effect. It requires only 1% of the aluminium used in conventional film laminates, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

„We wanted to convey the image of a clear, crisp winter's night with exotic Northern Lights flaring up. Such a complex printing process places high demands on the material. Smoothness and rigidity are important requirements. Therefore, the Cardboard quality have a particularly uniformly smooth surface and excellent folding and creasing properties, while at the same time offering first-class economy and environmental compatibility,” explains Mark Beamesderfer, Packaging Services Director at Metsä Board America.
