BASF has expanded its Ecovio portfolio to include new certified compostable grades. This expansion is intended to enable manufacturers of flexible packaging and branded goods companies to specifically tailor barrier properties and end-of-life options such as organic or paper recycling to specific application requirements and legal regulations.

The new Ecovio types from BASF offer a variety of barrier options. They are suitable for both extrusion coating and film lamination on paper and plastic substrates. The barriers are adaptable and can be used as mono- or multi-layer solutions against grease, liquids, oxygen, and moisture. This enables a wide range of applications, from food and beverages to personal care products, medical items, and pet food.

Focus on sustainability

A key feature of the expanded portfolio is the ability to combine the Ecovio types to create bespoke barrier constructions. This allows for the development of packaging that can compete with established solutions in terms of performance, while also making a significant contribution to sustainability. The certified home compostability of the materials enables environmentally friendly disposal, considerably reducing the ecological footprint of the packaging.

Response to regulatory requirements

The expansion of the Ecovio portfolio is also a response to increasing regulatory requirements for packaging materials. The ability to flexibly adjust barrier properties and recyclability gives manufacturers the opportunity to make their products future-proof while also meeting growing consumer expectations for sustainable packaging solutions.

BASF emphasizes that the new grades of Ecovio not only improve the functionality of packaging but also promote circularity. The company will present the expanded Ecovio portfolio at Interpack.
