With the installation and commissioning of solar cells, Huhtamaki China is taking the first step towards the Group's goal of using 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

Huhtamaki has a significant market share in China. first step towards its global sustainability goals undertaken. The first solar panels were installed and commissioned in the factories in Guangzhou and Shanghai. They were successfully connected to the power grid on 1 January 2022.

Sustainable packaging and sustainable production

With the 47,000 square metres in total installed solar modules are expected to be 3,000,000 kilowatt hours per year. This initially covers 10 per cent of the energy consumption of the two factories and reduces emissions by 2,374 tonnes of CO2 per year. The project, which utilises the latest monocrystalline silicon cell technology, was carried out in collaboration with ZSEN New Energy.

As one of the world's leading providers of sustainable packaging solutions, Huhtamaki has set itself the goal of, 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 and to make its entire production worldwide CO2-neutral.

Expansion of solar cells in China

The goals of Huhtamaki to combat climate change have been confirmed and approved by the „Science Based Targets Initiative“. The Solar energy project in China is another important step towards Huhtamaki's sustainability goals for 2030 and builds on the European VPPA agreement announced at the end of 2021.

„We believe that we can achieve our Group goal by implementing solutions that make sense locally. The installation and commissioning of our first solar panels in two of our four Chinese factories is an example of how we can achieve our goal through localisation. local initiative to make progress towards achieving our Group goals, that make a real difference in reducing emissions and support our goal of carbon neutrality.“

Thomasine Kamerling, Executive Vice President, Sustainability and Communications

China is endeavouring to reach the peak of CO2 emissions before 2030 and to become climate-neutral by 2060. The installation of solar systems on roofs plays an important role in the substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energies and the reduction of CO2 emissions in China.

"Huhtamaki supports China's transition to a low-carbon economy. The switch to renewable energy strengthens our commitment to China by offering sustainable food packaging solutions to protect food, the Chinese people and the environment.“
