Cologne cinema introduces compostable nacho bowl

The Cinedom cinema in Cologne is introducing Germany's first compostable nacho bowl. With the Blockbuster nacho bowl from partner Papacks, the cinema is reducing its consumption of plastic by over 1.25 tonnes per year.

The Cinedom cinema in Cologne is no longer using plastic nacho bowls and has introduced the first compostable nacho bowl in Germany. Cinedom developed the container together with its partner Papacks, thereby reducing its consumption of plastic by over 1.25 tonnes per year.

The nacho bowl has been specially designed to optimise the ratio of nachos to sauce. The prevents food waste and ensures a better balance between the individual components of the cinema snack. Their shape makes them easy to handle for sales and the patented design offers good carrying comfort for cinema guests. To create additional added value, for example Promotional stickers as a cashback option or voucher campaigns can be integrated into the Blockbuster nacho bowl from Papacks.

„After a few rounds of feedback in which Papacks has contributed its expertise in the field of sustainable packaging and we in turn have shaped the tray to meet the requirements of a large cinema and made it suitable for everyday use, we can finally offer our guests the great result. The compostable nacho bowl made from renewable raw materials is an enrichment for the entire cinema industry and therefore a big step for our environment.“

Manuel Leibrock, CMO of PapacksThe successful collaboration with Holger Pfaff and Cinedom is a prime example of sustainable teamwork. With the expertise for the somewhat unique cosmos of cinema operations and the joint exchange in the various design and development stages, the result was the nacho dish, which is optimally developed for cinema operation. We are delighted that Cinedom has positioned itself as a pioneer in the cinema industry with the goal of banning single-use plastic.“

Cinedom intends to further expand its commitment to the environment in the coming years. In doing so, the Cologne multiplex cinema is focusing on continuously developing its operations with the help of innovative and climate-neutral solutions. This is particularly important: Practical implementation and seamless integration of the solutions into workflows. This means that solutions are coordinated, planned and tested in such a way that they can be used in the long term. Short-term approaches are not part of the cinema's understanding of sustainability. Among other things, the Cinedom is currently testing a reusable concept for its 1-litre beverage cups, to gather initial findings for permanent use from 2023.
