With AIRplus Bio Home Compostable, Storopack is expanding its product portfolio with a sustainable film that is partly bio-based and compostable in one.

AIRplus Bio Home Compostable, the new bubble wrap from Storopack, puts the focus on sustainability, as it fulfils two definitions of bioplastic: it is partly bio-based and compostable in one. This type of film is partly made from the renewable raw material starch. The lightweight air cushions not only reduce the shipping weight, but also conserve resources and close the natural cycle.

The film is also TÜV Austria certified and therefore home and garden compostable. It can be disposed of together with organic waste in home compost. According to the DIN EN 13432 standard, on which this certification is based At least 90 per cent of the film is removed within 365 days. Depending on the temperature and microculture in the compost, microbes and heat also convert the remaining ten per cent completely into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

The certification ensures that the resulting biomass is compatible with plants and worms. As AIRplus Bio Home Compostable film is a bioplastic, neither plastic nor any other toxic material is left behind. Air cushions made from this innovative bio-film are characterised by are characterised by their excellent packaging properties and protect lightweight shipping goods reliable.

„Our goal for 2025 is to use at least 50 per cent raw materials made from recycled or renewable materials. Our new AIRplus Bio Home Compostable film brings us another step closer to this goal.“

Vicentina Pereira, Product Manager Air and Loose Fill at Storopack

In 2021, the company has already 33 per cent of the products manufactured in-house are made from renewable or recycled materials. Storopack also clearly distances itself from misleading labelling and plastic products with oxo or micro-additives, which are not really compostable but merely decompose and thus become invisible. The protective packaging specialist does not use such oxo materials as a matter of principle.

The film can simply be disposed of in the home compost heap in the garden, where it is decomposed by microorganisms. This helps to close the natural cycle. Alternatively, there are various end-of-life scenarios for the AIRplus Bio Home Compostable film. In many countries and regions, it can be disposed of in the organic waste bin for industrial composting. However, disposal depends on the regulations and standards of the various regions and local authorities and is still under development in some cases. The recipients of the bubble wrap can use the printed QR code to find out about disposal options in their country.
