How to successfully recycle folding cartons

At Fachpack, the focus of the joint PackBox presentation by the Fachverband Faltschachtel-Industrie e.V. (FFI) and Pro Carton will be on the recycling of fibre-based packaging.

As part of the PackBox-Sustainable Design and Materials„ on 28 September, two speakers will be presenting from 3 to 4 p.m. in Hall 9, Stand 309 the latest findings on the recycling of folding cartons.

Ralf Mack, co-director of the Allianz 4evergreen expert group „Circularity by Design“ and Director New Business Development Consumer Products at Graphic Packaging International. Ralf Mack will take a closer look at the results of the alliance's work.

The Circularity by Design guideline was developed by 29 packaging design experts and reviewed by 114 industry leaders to to develop guidelines for the entire fibre-based packaging value chain. The result is precise recommendations for the design of recyclable fibre-based packaging so that manufacturers can optimise their packaging to support an efficient recycling process.

Recycling over 25 cycles possible

Rene Eckhart from Graz University of Technology will then explain the results of a laboratory study conducted in 2021, how fibre properties change through multiple recycling and how often waste paper fibres can be recycled, in order to remain suitable for cartonboard production. In the study, folding boxboard was recycled several times to determine whether and what effects are to be expected on the mechanical properties of the material, including its strength and pressure resistance.

The result dispels old myths: The fibre can be easily recycled over 25 cycles. The number of recycling cycles is only limited by the waste paper collection rate and losses that occur when cleaning the fibre material. Further proof that folding cartons are a prime example of a successful circular economy.
