In a test programme with other partners, CEFLEX intends to develop guidelines for flexible packaging containing aluminium foil. The guidelines are intended to help improve the recyclability of such packaging and create a better understanding of the scope of flexible packaging.
CEFLEX is working in collaboration with Flexible Packaging Europe, the European Aluminium Foil Association and other stakeholders on Guidelines for flexible packaging containing aluminium foil included. The development of the new guide coincides with an extensive testing programme that CEFLEX with the support of UK Research and Innovation to improve the understanding and design guidelines for flexible packaging.

The project is run in collaboration with FPE, EAFA and other leading participants - including non-CEFLEX stakeholders who bring additional technical and operational experience. A Working group with representatives from the entire value chain for flexible packaging containing aluminium foil began its work in spring 2022.
„Although plastic-based flexible packaging is prevalent and a key focus, CEFLEX has always been material neutral and works to analyse and achieve the best technical and environmental outcomes for all flexible packaging. This includes structures containing aluminium foil and we are pleased to address this important element with key organisations and stakeholders from across the value chain.“
DisplayGrahan Houlder, CEFLEX Coordinator

Key questions on the sortability and recyclability of flexible packaging containing aluminium foil are included in the CEFLEX design test programme and enrich the design guidelines. This includes a comprehensive Understanding of the technical possibilities of eddy current separation, the aluminium recycling pyrolysis path and advanced separation technologies, that have already been categorised as particularly important.
„Flexible packaging containing aluminium foil is particularly valuable for lightweight, highly preservative packaging, which is often found in dairy, dry food, pharmaceuticals, pet food and more. The collaboration with a large number of stakeholders along the entire value chain and the latest test results are an inspiring starting point for the ‚Designing for a Circular Economy‘ guidelines for aluminium foil. We are confident that they will further accelerate and demonstrate innovation and progress in improving the design, collection, sorting and recycling of this packaging format.“
Guido Aufdemkamp, Executive Director of the European Aluminium Foil Association
The guidelines are developed, refined and validated by a range of stakeholders, and to be published in summer 2023.
