Edeka has been offering fruit with an Apeel layer in selected stores since 2020. The packaging solution from the US company of the same name is intended to ensure a longer shelf life for the fruit. This has now been confirmed by the Fraunhofer Institute in a study.

Scientists of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, Freising, have demonstrated the effectiveness of the plant-based Apeel-The shelf life of food is analysed and evaluated over a longer period of time. The results provide validated data on the ability of the Apeel process to maintain the external and internal quality characteristics of the products. Firmness and appearance are important purchase and consumption criteria for consumers. The study confirms this: Apeel has a positive effect on the shelf life of the products in the Edeka- and Netto stores, such as avocados, mandarins and oranges.

Twice as long shelf life in some cases

Avocados, for example, reach the supermarket chain and thus the consumer at the stage of optimum ripeness. This optimum ripeness stage usually lasts around three to four days for avocados - after which they spoil more quickly. However, the pre-ripened avocados protected with Apeel remained in this stage for an average of almost three days longer than the uncoated fruit under the test conditions. Avocados with Apeel also showed less spoilage on the inside and outside of the fruit during storage compared to uncoated avocados under the same conditions.

In comparison with conventionally waxed fruit and when measured in relation to the defined quality characteristics, mandarins with Apeel protection again showed an increase in shelf life of seven days, Oranges with the protection held up well under the test conditions used four days longer (firm and without spoilage) than conventionally waxed oranges.
