Mondi is supporting the Spanish food manufacturer Angulas Aguinaga in converting its Krissia brand to recyclable, paper-based secondary packaging, thereby significantly reducing the amount of plastic used.
The surimi sticks were previously packaged in a multi-material plastic solution. Thanks to the collaboration with Mondi, Angulas Aguinaga and its Krissia brand now provide on secondary packaging made of FunctionalBarrier Paper from Mondi around. The new solution protects the chilled product and significantly reduces plastic at the same time - which should save up to 20 tonnes of plastic every year.
Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper is made from renewable and certified responsibly sourced resources and offers a range of benefits: Mondi processes the strong and tear-resistant kraft paper entirely in-house, to ensure customised barrier protection of the food and sealability of the packaging. The final packaging is recyclable in Spain's existing paper recycling streams.
„By working closely with the Krissia team and looking at the entire product journey, we were able to ensure that the surimi sticks are packaged in recyclable packaging that supports a circular economy and keeps valuable materials in the loop. We took the time to focus on the needs of the product first, before optimising our FunctionalBarrier Paper to provide a responsible, recyclable replacement for the previous plastic alternative.“
