Imballaggi Alimentari, an Italian manufacturer of packaging solutions for ice cream, has launched the Remaxigel box made from Ccycled polystyrene. During production, BASF replaces fossil raw materials with pyrolysis oil, which is obtained through chemical recycling.
With its products, BASF is increasingly helping to integrate the circular economy into people's everyday lives. Thanks to the special manufacturing process, Styropor Ccycled offers particular sustainability benefits because Fossil raw materials are replaced by pyrolysis oil during production. The pyrolysis oil used to produce this new type of packaging is obtained by BASF technology partners through the chemical recycling of various types of plastic waste that would otherwise be utilised as energy or sent to landfill.
In the BASF-Production network combines recycled and fossil raw materials and can subsequently no longer be distinguished from one another. Therefore, the recycling share to the end product Styropor Ccycled using the so-called mass balance approach. Compared to conventional polystyrene, the production of packaging made from polystyrene Ccycled generates 50 per cent less CO2-emissions with the same quality and performance.
"We are committed to making the polystyrene supply chain increasingly circular. BASF introduced traditional EPS to the market more than 70 years ago. Today, thanks to our ongoing commitment to research and development as part of our global climate protection efforts, we can offer our customers a more sustainable version of this traditional product."
DisplayGregor Haverkemper, Head of Marketing for the Styrenic Foams division at BASF
Remaxigel is one of the seven winners of the Ecodesign Award for "Circular Creativity", awarded by the Italian National Packaging Consortium Conai.
"We are very proud of this award, as it recognises our expertise, our consistent focus on technological innovation and our strong customer orientation. We are currently working with BASF on an even more sustainable Remaxigel version with a new inner shell made from recycled material that meets the strict requirements of the food industry."
Michele Dell'Avanzato, Research and Development Manager at Imballaggi Alimentari Srl
