German container glass market with positive development

Sales of container glass rose by 4.3% last year and amounted to around 4.6 million tonnes in 2022. Developments were positive both at home and abroad.

Sales of container glass rose by 4.3 per cent last year, reaching around 4.6 million tonnes in 2022. According to the Bundesverband Glasindustrie, the developments in Germany and abroad were positive.

According to the industry association, the coronavirus-related influences of recent years are no longer noticeable. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine also had less of an impact on supply security than initially feared, particularly with regard to natural gas. Thus the production of container glass can be kept stableeven though supply chains were massively disrupted in some cases and costs rose significantly in many areas. There was no migration of glassworks abroad.

Sales of beverage bottles for non-alcoholic drinks on the rise

Sales in the beverage bottle segment are positive in 2022 compared to the previous year, up 6.2 per cent. A look at the sub-segments shows sales growth in the beer and spirits (up 6.8 per cent) and wine and sparkling wine (up 3.5 per cent) segments. An even Non-alcoholic beverages recorded more significant sales growth of 11.9 per cent. (water, milk and juice). Following last year's decline in sales, the upward trend of previous years appears to be continuing here.

Also the packaging glass for food and packaging glass for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics segment closed 2022 with positive sales growth of 0.5 per cent. The sub-segments developed differently: sales of packaging glass for food without OGS (fruit, vegetables and preserves) fell slightly by 0.2 per cent in 2022. In the packaging glass with OGS sub-segment, an increase of 1.5 per cent was recorded for the year as a whole compared to the same period in the previous year.

"Despite the crises in recent years, the container glass market is stable and is even recording a positive sales trend in almost all segments. The demand for container glass remains very high. Consumers appreciate its important protective function, which provides optimum protection for food and beverages. We are optimistic that the positive trend will continue in 2023."
