The European Association of Cartonboard and Folding Carton Manufacturers keeps an eye on the market and all developments with continuous studies and surveys. A major topic here is sustainability.

 

Episode 8: „A heart made of cardboard"

At interpack 2023, Jan Malte Andresen spoke live in the trade fair TV studio with Winfried Mühling about the results of the studies on cartonboard and consumer perception. Mühling sees a pioneering role for cartonboard in terms of sustainability and the circular economy. According to the Carbon Footrpint study by ProCarton, the industry's efforts to reduce emissions are bearing fruit. Rethinking is continuing, especially when it comes to energy.

We already use 62 per cent renewable energy in industry today. And the trend is continuing across the entire value chain. And perhaps the current high price of cardboard is also contributing to the fact that much more emphasis is being placed on reduction. Reducing waste - in other words, reducing rejects and then looking at saving energy step by step.

But the association has not only looked at the industry side. It also regularly conducts surveys among consumers. The last one came up with some exciting results regarding the role of packaging in purchasing decisions.

Almost 50 per cent of consumers in Europe have chosen a different product in the last 12 months simply because of the packaging. This shows the importance of packaging.
