Together with an Italian ham producer, AMB Spa has tested packaging films made from mono-PET. The new films were developed according to eco-design aspects and fulfil all European recycling guidelines.
AMB's mono PET films are recyclable and suitable for closed-loop processes. The mono material with a high barrier ensures good shelf life for the packaged food, is versatile, particularly hard-wearing and highly transparent. To further increase sustainability, users can opt for up to 100 per cent rPET in the material selection. The mono-PET bottom films with a high barrier effect without EVOH can be combined with peelable top films or with top films made of mono-PET.
User test confirms savings potential with mono PET
In cooperation with one of Italy's leading ham producers, AMB has now tested its mono-PET packaging films in order to further optimise them and make them even more cost-effective. First, the existing thermoformed product packaging for the range of meat products and ham was tested in order to identify potential for optimisation. Then AMB developed a new packaging geometry, to reduce PET/PE material consumption by reducing the film thickness.

The design of the product carrier made from the bottom film has been revised. Stability is fully guaranteed throughout the packaging process and right up to the chiller cabinets of food retailers. The new packaging is characterised by a more attractive appearance and increased performance, as the product shelf life has been extended. AMB not only developed the optimised packaging design, but also used its in-house toolmaking department to implement it.

The bottom line The new development saves around 360,000 euros a year in material costs and has reduced the packaging weight by 20 per cent. In in-house stress tests, the new packaging achieved an improvement of 93 per cent without affecting the existing thermoforming process.
Everything under one roof
The complete All-in-one-place service from AMB opens up new possibilities for users in packaging development. Thanks to the extensive range of services, which includes design, toolmaking, product/material specification, print design and printing, all individual services, including the respective costs, can be viewed in the overall concept.
