Mondi already won various awards last year with its FunctionalBarrier Paper. Now the paper-based solution has been honoured by Les Crudettes as packaging for ready-to-eat salads.
Mondi and the French vegetable producer Les Crudettes - LSDH Group's Vegetable Division has been awarded Gold at this year's DOW Packaging Innovation Awards for its use of Mondi's recyclable FunctionalBarrier Paper to protect ready-to-eat salads. The Material replaces plastic films and laminates, traditionally used for FMCG and consumer products with a recyclable and renewable solution.
FunctionalBarrier Paper consists of 95 per cent paper with a functional barrier layer and keeps Les Crudettes' salad as fresh as the previous alternative. The mechanical properties include Puncture resistance, flexibility, printability and barrier protection. The coating technology used creates barriers against grease and water vapour and ensures freshness for up to 10 days - the same period as with the previous plastic packaging.
„Les Crudettes set us the challenge of developing a fully recyclable paper-based packaging solution and we are delighted that the Packaging Innovation Award recognises FunctionalBarrier Paper for its sustainability. It is an ideal example of developing packaging that is designed for recycling. We are delighted that our product has been recognised as a Gold winner.“

As part of its EcoSolutions approach, Mondi worked closely with Les Crudettes to help the company with the support the achievement of its sustainability goals, which consists of reducing the amount of plastic in the packaging for its salads. The packaging in France is demonstrably recyclable in waste paper and saves 137 tonnes of plastic per year. The solution also supports Mondi's MAP2030 sustainability target of making 100 per cent of its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
„This award is recognition of our ground-breaking innovation; our pouches could revolutionise the ready-to-eat salad market. The collaboration with Mondi has led to a huge reduction in the amount of plastic required.“
