Baby bottle with recycled material

Solvay presents a polymer for food contact based on certified recycled material and uses it for baby bottles from Hegen.

Solvay has entered into a partnership with Hegen and is now presenting a polymer for food contact based on certified recycled material. Part of the collaboration is a baby bottle made partly from the recycled material.

Solvay, a global leader in speciality materials, has entered into a strategic partnership with Hegen Pte Ltd to use sustainable DuradexTM polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) MB to manufacture Hegen's Press-to-Close, Twist-to-OpenTM (PCTOTM) premium baby bottles. The PPSUCircular material has a non-fossil raw material content whose mass balance (MB) is certified by an independent service provider. and meets the demands of end customers for more sustainable products. DuradexTM PPSU is a amorphous, naturally amber-transparent polymer and free from artificial pigments, phthalates and bisphenols such as BPA.

„Brand owners and manufacturers in the childcare market are increasingly looking for ways to increase the sustainability of their products without compromising their safety, economy or practicality. Hegen baby feeding bottles are widely recognised for their high quality and are made from materials of the highest purity to ensure a healthy and comfortable feeding and drinking experience for mother and child. We are delighted to announce that the customer has decided to use our mass balance certified PPSU in the production of their iconic bottles.“

DuradexTM PPSU MB has the following properties Circular material has a non-fossil raw material content of 54 per cent, whose mass balance is verified by an independent third party in accordance with the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification PLUS (ISCC PLUS) standard.

„We have high expectations for this strategic material partnership with Solvay, which will help us to optimise the environmental performance of our baby bottles in line with our ambitious sustainability goals. The DuradexTM circular polymer demonstrates the same high performance characteristics as the material previously used in the production of our Hegen PCTOTM premium bottles, including excellent processability and uncompromising durability. It therefore offers a very economical alternative to the direct substitution of purely fossil-based PPSU solutions.“

The DuradexTM PPSU MB polymer from Solvay is also Scratch-resistant and stain-resistant as well as resistant to odour absorption and provides a natural non-stick surface. It combines outstanding hydrolytic stability and fracture toughness with high heat resistance. These properties also make the lightweight and ergonomically shaped wide-neck bottles suitable for more than 1,000 sterilisation and dishwasher cycles in hot water without any risk of damage.
