Following the vote on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in the EU Parliament on 24 April, the BDE Federal Association of the German Waste Management, Water Management and Circular Economy has spoken out. The association welcomes the formal adoption of the EU Packaging Regulation.
„Parliament's formal approval before the end of this parliamentary term was right and important. We are particularly relieved that the Packaging Ordinance has been finalised in the version agreed in the trialogue without the need for short-term and further discussions.
amendments were adopted. The BDE will work to ensure that all necessary delegated acts are now adopted in a practical manner and in the interests of the circular economy.“Andreas Bruckschen, BDE- Chief Executive Officer
At their meeting yesterday, Wednesday, in the last week of the current legislative period, MEPs approved the political agreement reached in the trialogue on the EU Packaging Regulation formally adopted by a large majority. The proposal received 476 votes in favour, 129 against and 24 abstentions.
The European Parliament and the Council of the EU reached an agreement in the trilogue in March after swiftly drawing up their negotiating mandates. The regulation New rules for the entire life cycle of packaging on. Among other things, it stipulates that from 2030, all packaging placed on the market must be fully or at least largely recyclable. Mandatory use quotas for recyclates will apply to plastic packaging in future.
In addition, packaging that is difficult to separate from organic waste, such as coffee/tea filters and pads or adhesive labels for fruit and vegetables, must be compostable in future. A Europe-wide harmonisation of packaging labels and container markings should make it easier for consumers to dispose of waste in future and ensure that it is collected separately.
„The Packaging Ordinance is an important step towards a fully recyclable packaging market in Europe. The hope is that the agreement will also be accepted in the Council of the European Union and not be obstructed on the home straight. Parliament's consistent approval of the agreement reached in the trilogue negotiations can therefore also be seen as a clear signal to the Council, which is expected to vote on the regulation in the autumn or winter of this year.“
