Beiersdorf aims to reduce its emissions by 30 per cent in Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2025. The company has now presented further sustainable packaging solutions for products in its range. These include a refill concept for the Eucerin brand.
To mark this year's World Environment Day on 5 June, the Beiersdorf AG Nivea presents further progress in the implementation of its ‚Climate Care‘ strategy at product level. The sustainability team presents the revised Nivea Sun and Labello ranges with reduced CO2- Footprint. Eucerin is also launching a refill concept for its hyaluronic filler products.
With its sustainability agenda CARE BEYOND SKIN, the Group aims to achieve absolute sustainability by 2025. Reduction of CO2-emissions by 30 per cent along the entire value chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3) compared to the base year 2018. To this end, Beiersdorf is working with its suppliers and revising the product ranges of its global brands - both in terms of formulas and packaging.
„With our extensive expertise and innovative strength, we are successively revising all products to make them more sustainable. The focus here is on harmonising the excellent skin care properties and outstanding product performance for our consumers with sustainability.“
Dr Gitta Neufang, Corporate Senior Vice President Research and Development at Beiersdorf
„Our climate target is one of the most ambitious in the industry - and we are making very good progress: by the end of 2022, we had already achieved 17 per cent absolute CO2-reduction. The consistent redesign of the products makes a significant contribution to this success,“ adds Jean-François Pascal, Vice President Corporate Sustainability.
The Nivea Sun range has been revised - both the packaging and the formula - and is available in a more environmentally friendly form from this season. For the Nivea Sun Protection & Care range, this means that the Bottles, caps and yellow pump attachments made from 50 per cent recycled plastic (PCR) are produced. They therefore contribute to Beiersdorf's „Plastic Pledge“, which aims to halve the use of petroleum-based virgin plastic by 2025. There are also improved and more environmentally friendly formulas that do not require the UV filters octinoxate and oxybenzone. This significantly reduces the ecological footprint of the Nivea Sun range.
Last year, the sustainability team also revised the Labello range, thereby creating a Reduction of 250 tonnes of CO2-emissions per year achieved. Plastic is replaced by paper and cardboard, production lines have been optimised, the production process consumes less energy and less CO2-emissions. Visible changes in packaging are the Plastic-free folding box made from recycled and FSC-certified paper as well as the stick itself, which is now made exclusively from polypropylene (PP) and is known as the Monomaterial fully recyclable is. Almost all formulas have also been adapted again and contain 99 per cent ingredients of natural origin, in particular ethically sourced shea butter. The even more sustainable chapsticks will be available in Germany from September 2023, with other countries to follow.
Eucerin, Beiersdorf's second largest global brand, recently launched sustainable packaging for its Hyaluron Filler Day and Night Cream in the form of a refill jar. The Refill concept requires only 8 g instead of 89 g plastic, This corresponds to a plastic saving of around 90 per cent if consumers keep the outer jar with lid for further use and only buy the inner jar. According to the company Save up to 24 tonnes of plastic per year. The product's folding box is made from around 92 per cent recycled paper.
„At Eucerin, we are constantly working to maximise product efficacy while minimising our impact on the environment. Due to the significant material savings, our Eucerin refill jar is a milestone on our ambitious path to greater sustainability. It makes an important contribution to our goal of reducing the use of plastic and minimising CO2-emissions.“

At the Fairground Festival in Hanover, „Throw'n'Go“, a reusable deposit system from Tomra Reuse, was used for the first time, which fully digitises the purchase and return of drinks cups.

The study makes it clear that packaging plays a central role in sustainability assessment.

The Hamburg-based company one.five develops packaging with the help of modern AI technologies, currently a paper-based barrier packaging for an organic spice manufacturer.

The EU winter package recognises the crisis in plastics recycling, but does not provide any immediate help, criticises the BDE and calls for binding „Made in Europe“ targets.

The new packaging is expected to replace more than 450,000 units of conventional disposable packaging.
