Berry Global has launched a child-resistant closure that utilises digital technology to improve medication adherence. A microprocessor integrated into the closure stores a wide range of data.

The new digital, childproof Berry Digi-Cap cap is suitable for for clinical trials, drug development, research and academic studies. The data on patient behaviour is analysed in order to improve treatment adherence and gain insights into the effectiveness of the medication.

A microprocessor integrated into the closure records the patient's openings and saves the usage history in its memory. Furthermore the closure continuously monitors and logs the storage temperature, which can provide valuable data for research and development.

The microprocessor is activated as soon as the patient presses the fastener to open it. The recorded information can then be easily transferred via NFC to external devices such as smartphones and PCs for further viewing and analysis. The data can be uploaded to a patient-oriented mobile app and reviewed by healthcare professionals and used to optimise treatment plans.

The large amount of data collected through the closure can not only promote patient compliance, but also help drug manufacturers and healthcare providers, optimise the efficiency of studies and increase the effectiveness of drugs.

The app can also remind patients when to take their medication and how to store it correctly. Drug manufacturers can use the closure Equip with additional functions such as LED lights that indicate when the medication should be taken, for example, by flashing green at the corresponding time.

The patent-pending child-resistant 38 mm closure has a finely ribbed side wall that provides a better grip and makes handling easier for patients. The childproof push and turn mechanism ensures product safety, and clear, illustrated opening instructions make handling easier for the patient. An audible clicking sound signals opening and thus ensures additional safety.

The fastener is Compatible with 38-400 standard pharmaceutical packaging bottles and existing filling systems and can withstand the sealing process.
