Whether detergents, paint buckets, barrels or champagne cartons on pallets - the BEUMER stretch hood high-performance packaging system always efficiently covers the various products with a highly stretchable stretch bonnet and fulfils the industry-specific requirements: The goods are safely protected from environmental influences such as sun, dirt and moisture during outdoor storage.
With the BEUMER stretch hood A, BEUMER Group has developed a High-performance packaging machine which customers can handle particularly ergonomically, safely and efficiently. This includes intuitive menu navigation of the machine control system via a soft-touch panel and gentle transport of the film into the system.
The machine has a high throughput capacity and requires more than 40 per cent less space than previous models in this machine series.

„Our customers come from the cement, construction and chemical industries, but they can also be found in the logistics sector or the consumer goods market, for example. Every industry has its own requirements,“ says Gregor Baumeister, Head of the Palletising and Packaging Systems Division at BEUMER Group.

Efficient use for retailers
For retailers, the BEUMER stretch hood is an efficient solution for safely packaging consumer goods for transport and storage. „Safe packaging is possible, for example Mixed picked pallets from drugstores and pallets on which the unmixed cardboard goods is stored,“ describes Baumeister.
For foodstuffs and consumer goods, the film bonnet must in particular fulfil the Product protection ensure that the film is secure. Tamper protection is also becoming increasingly important: unauthorised persons cannot remove goods from the pallet without destroying the film.
To ensure a high level of transport security and load stability, the stretch film adapts to each product stacked on a pallet. During the packaging process, the film is very stretchy and holds the goods via the restoring forces firmly together in the film. Since, unlike shrink-wrap packaging, no heat is used, the film cannot stick to the product during the packaging process.

High-quality sparkling wine safely packaged
The high level of transport safety offered by this packaging method has also Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellars GmbH, headquartered in Freyburg an der Unstrut in Saxony-Anhalt. At the Eltville site in the Rheingau-Taunus district near Mainz, the various drinks are automatically filled into bottles, sealed with corks, agraffe and capsules and labelled accordingly. They are then placed in the various cartons.
A palletiser picks up the packaged bottles and stacks them on waiting pallets. For a long time, the top layer of the cartons was glued and transported to an automatic binding machine, which strapped the palletised beverage cartons. The beverage cartons are then transported on pallets to the outgoing goods department, where they are prepared for the logistics service provider's shuttle lorries. Every year, around 300,000 pallets the location.
But time and time again, cartons came loose from their bond on the loading areas during transport due to sharp braking, sudden steering manoeuvres or cornering, and bottles were broken. What's more: More and more customers are relying on automatic loading and unloading systems to speed up the flow of materials in their central warehouses. This requires the Goods adequately secured be.

Safer, more stable and, above all, sustainable
In order to reduce transport damage and meet the increased logistics requirements, those responsible were looking for a packaging solution that promised greater safety and stability for the beverage stacks. The technology and logistics managers approached BEUMER Group with a specific enquiry. In order to convince those responsible of the innovative technology, the full-range supplier of packaging lines invited them to Beckum for trials with the original products.
„Our high-performance packaging system covers the palletised beverage cartons at the customer's premises with a 40 micrometre thin film cover“, reports Baumeister. This means that they are effectively secured during transport and reach the customer undamaged. The manufacturer can also use this Multi-format system pack two different pallet sizes. The changeover is semi-automatic.
Sustainability in black and white
In addition to load stability, the issue of sustainability also played a decisive role for the sparkling wine producers. BEUMER Group has developed the BEUMER Sustainability Index (BSI) for this purpose. With this validation system, the system provider systematically and continuously evaluates the Sustainability on new machines holistically on three levels: Economy, ecology and social responsibility.
Economic performance, market presence, financial opportunities and risks are known parameters. However, products and systems only become economically sustainable when they and the associated production processes are aligned with long-term customer benefits.
The BEUMER specialists consider the respective product in its entirety. Entirety, not only from a cost perspective. For example, an intuitive interface between man and machine simplifies operation and ensures fast film changes. It can also be used to change operating parameters. This system is also extremely energy-efficient.
If the filled bottles are exposed to high temperatures on the pallet, for example during transport due to solar radiation, condensation forms. A perforated film is therefore used to allow the water vapour to escape. The special thing about these thin films: after use, they can be returned to the reusable system and reused - which significantly reduces packaging waste.

Perfectly integrated into the line
The BEUMER stretch hood series is a modular system that Flexible response to individual user requirements can be customised. BEUMER Group has developed a special device to make it easier to process the perforated films. This ensures that the gripper system or suction device can pick up the films without any problems. This is because with perforated films in particular, which are also very thin, there is a risk that the holes will block at the cut edges during the punching process.
The palletised beverage cartons are fed to the packaging system via a conveyor. The control technology recognises the different stacking heights automatically and adjusts flexibly. An ultrasonic sensor determines the required film length.
The film is then cut to size and welded at the cut edge. The bonnet formed in this way is stretched, pulled over the stack and guided to the base of the pallet. A special foot reinforcement provides even more holding force. The stretch bonnet system works via the high restoring forces of the film. This is very tight, „like a second skin“, The aluminium plate attaches to the entire stack and thus provides the required stability.
This fast and efficient packaging process ensures that the goods are safe from Weather influences protected. The smooth surface of the transparent and highly flexible film also ensures that the palletised goods are clearly visible. Up to 100 load units per hour can be packed in this way. A conveyor system finally transports the finished palletised goods to the dispatch area.
„Thanks to the high transparency of the film, a Clear view on the packaged goods,“ says Baumeister. Barcodes are also read perfectly. The film itself can also be used as Advertising medium printed and coloured.
Stretch bonnet in a metal drum?
This is also possible. For example, if the contents should not come into contact with the surface of the container. This can be the case with lubricants and adhesives, antifreeze, resins, brake cleaners, but also with bulk goods such as granulates. In this case, the inside of the drum can be lined with a foil bonnet.
„Whether lubricant or sparkling wine, with our BEUMER stretch hood we are equipped for pretty much any industry,“ emphasises Baumeister.
