High-quality labels that are also biodegradable. Picnic approached Nordic Label, a Finnish label printing company, with this task. The print shop is now producing compostable labels with an adhesive material from Herma for the new customer.
Picnic currently has 38 branches between Helsinki and Rovaniemi in Lapland, offering a wide range of food, from sandwiches and rolls to salads and complete hot meals. The company has long emphasised the importance of responsible handling of packaging materials.
Picnic switched its lunch boxes to a deposit-based reusable system back in spring 2021. However, the strategy also includes Materials that are only used once, preferably biodegradable design. This was also the challenge that Picnic presented to the label printer. Nordic Label provided.

The new labels are used to provide baguettes and bread rolls wrapped in paper, which are offered in self-service counters, with the necessary individual product labelling and at the same time seal the paper wrapping. With the production of labels that are printed on a special adhesive material from Herma Nordic Label was able to convince the customer Picnic.
For this combination of materials Herma the so-called Seedling sign received. This means that it is certified in accordance with EN 13432. This standard is an internationally recognised Proof of the industrial compostability of biodegradable products. In this way, complete packaging, including labels, can be made compostable.
HERMAextracoat is a product that white, one-sided slightly glossy coated adhesive label paper made from FSC Mix Credit material. It is suitable for demanding labels with multi-colour printing in all classic printing processes; in the case of Picnic, Nordic Label used a digital printing machine from Xeikon. In a first step, two oval-shaped coloured label variants were produced.
