Borealis and Menshen develop closures made from recycled material

The new closures from Menshen are based on compounds from Borealis Borcycle™.

Plastics manufacturer Borealis and Menshen, a specialist in plastic closures and packaging systems, have developed packaging closures made from post-consumer recycled material. The ten different packaging closure systems are based on Borealis' Borcycle™ technology.

Borcycle is a new recycling technology from Borealis. It converts the waste streams of various polyolefins into versatile solutions with added value. It is used to produce high-quality compounds from recycled polyolefins (rPO). These are suitable for use in a Wide range of rigid packaging applications. The technology combines the recycling and compounding expertise of Borealis with the already familiar Borstar® multimodal and nucleation technologies. The packaging solutions are primarily used as closures for cleaning and household products. They also include 2K closures.

Menshen uses a strict process to ensure that the quality of the post-consumer recycled (PCR) material selected for a closure perfectly matches the required Functionality is harmonised. In the course of the collaboration, the two companies discovered that Borcycle UG522MO, a polypropylene (PP) compound consisting of 50 per cent virgin material and 50 per cent PCR content, is particularly suitable for the new closures.

This is because, among other things, it enables CO2 emissions to be reduced by up to 15 per cent compared to the use of comparable 100 per cent PP virgin material for similarly sophisticated packaging solutions. It also offers a Reliable and consistent high qualityThis makes the material particularly suitable for rigid packaging applications.

"The functionality of a closure can be affected by natural variations in the quality of the PCR materials. By making ideal use of our specific expertise, Menshen and Borealis can determine, which ratios of recyclate and virgin material for which applications are suitable. We are delighted to be working with Borealis to meet the growing demand from our own customers, retailers and end customers for a wider range of sustainable yet high quality packaging options."
