In 2013, the Barthel Group was the first label printing company in the world to commission a digital stroboscope from Nyquist Systems for web monitoring. Nyquist has been part of the BST Group since the beginning of 2019.
Nyquist Systems, manufacturer of Inspection systems for narrow web printing processes, brought TubeScan digital strobe as an alternative to conventional strobe lamps. Since then, the Barthel Group, which specialises in the production of self-adhesive labels, has followed every step in the development of TubeScan systems. The company now has several machines equipped with these systems in its printing and converting departments. for the 100% inspection equipped.
„We wanted to test the quality, handling and reliability in day-to-day operations,“ explains Mischa Barthel, Managing Partner of the Barthel Group, explains why his company installed the world's first digital stroboscope. „The first TubeScan was more of a solution for mislabelling control. But we recognised its potential back then. It was only a matter of time before its area scan camera would achieve a higher resolution and therefore better image quality. In addition, Nyquist Systems Managing Director Dr Stephan Krebs gave us the assurance at the time that the TubeScan would be continuously developed in the direction of 100% inspection.“
Quality and functionality further developed
Over the years, the focus has shifted from detecting the most important defects in the label rolls already produced to preventive avoidance of errors in printing, that would lead to waste. This was made possible above all by the constantly increasing resolution of the systems' matrix cameras. With their high resolution of 4k The latest area scan cameras have largely caught up with line scan cameras in terms of the quality of 100% image reproduction. Today, for the entire TubeScan portfolio, comparatively Cost-effective 9-megapixel area scan cameras „Made in Germany“ available. They achieve in label printing with web widths from 330 mm to 430 mm Resolutions of 83 µm or 100 µm and for special applications even Resolutions up to 55 µm. But Nyquist Systems has also continuously expanded the functionality of the software, the real-time visualisation options and the inspection and measurement process, including the lighting options.
Double protection
In the meantime, just under half of the 35 printing presses of the Barthel Group are equipped with TubeScan systems. In addition, these systems are used in the assembly process in several machines. for the final inspection in use. In large areas of the company's production process, the Quality today in two steps controlled. The double safeguard guarantees uncompromising zero-defect production. Costly complaints are ruled out.
Barthel is currently thinking about it, all presses with 100% inspection in the next step the nine digital printing machines, which primarily produce smaller runs and individualised labels.
