Interseroh and Burger King launch joint reusable pilot project

In a six-month pilot project, Interseroh and Burger King are introducing reusable drinks cups in the twelve Burger King restaurants in Cologne and Frechen. The fast food chain is also trialling reusable packaging in the UK.

In a six-month pilot project, Interseroh and Burger King are introducing reusable beverage cups in the twelve Burger King restaurants in Cologne and Frechen. A deposit system is being used for the implementation. Burger King is also currently trialling reusable cups and containers in the UK in collaboration with Loop.

Customers can order reusable beverage cups with their order. as an alternative to disposable packaging to be selected. A deposit system is used for the implementation, with which the reusable cups for hot and cold drinks can be borrowed for one euro and returned to all participating restaurants.

With active use of the up to 60,000 cups put into circulation hundreds of thousands of disposable cups can be saved. As Burger King's long-standing environmental and waste disposal service provider, Interseroh wants to support the goal of avoiding waste by reducing plastic and recycling.

The knowledge gained from the pilot project will be used to expand the system throughout Germany and develop further reusable alternatives. The aim is to offer reusable options across the board by 2023.

During the pilot period, Interseroh takes over all the steps, to keep the reusable drinks cups in circulation. Once the used cups have been collected, they are cleaned in compliance with all hygiene standards and then delivered to Burger King for reuse.

Burger King also tests reusable packaging in the UK

UK customers can now choose from ten Burger King products served in Loop reusable packaging. The pilot test is part of the company's commitment, ban single-use plastic from its restaurants by 2025.

The five-month trial will take place in five restaurants in Ipswich and Newmarket. Customers can against a deposit Use reusable cups or burger containers instead of disposable plastic.

The Loop app is then used to Return packaging in special loop containers the barcode on the packaging is scanned and customers receive their deposit back.

As early as 2020 Burger King and Loop had announced a partnership, to carry out a pilot project with reusable packaging in selected restaurants in the USA and Japan.
