
In order to improve the ecological footprint of capsule packaging, Greiner Packaging is currently working on a solution made from compostable polymer. Certification by TÜV Austria Belgium nv began in February and should be completed in the autumn.
Greiner Packaging has been producing packaging for the booming capsule market for many years. In the coffee sector, capsules are already almost standard equipment in many offices and households. also tea, cocoa and even baby food and various soft drinks are increasingly being packaged in capsule form.
In terms of production Greiner Packaging The packaging is based on a precise process and barrier technology. This protects the packaged product from external influences such as oxygen, extends its shelf life and preserves its optimum flavour. MBT, Multibarrier Technology, can be used to in combination with thermoforming, injection moulding and in-mould labelling are used.
Disposal in garden compost
When it comes to the topic of sustainability, many people are critical of capsules - but the packaging form is more environmentally friendly than its image suggests. After all, the packaging optimally protects the product and waste, for example due to contents that have gone bad, can be avoided.
But if Greiner Packaging has its way, packaging will become even more sustainable in the future: Currently First capsules produced from a compostable polymer, which can be easily recycled at home in your own compost.
„It was important for us to find a solution that met our high quality standards for product protection and was also sustainable, environmentally friendly and practical to use. After a lot of research, we decided on a polymer that is compostable and has good barrier properties. We have already completed the first successful product tests with this material.“

The certification phase for the new home compostable capsule by TÜV Austria Belgium nv has also been underway since the beginning of February. The aim is to obtain the „OK Home Compost“ certificate: this is only awarded to products that also fulfil the following criteria can be composted at low temperatures - for example in the garden compost heap.
„Around 50 per cent of all household waste consists of organic material.
