The Koehler NexPlus Advanced barrier innovation from Koehler Paper is used for chocolate products from chocolate start-up nucao. The primary paper packaging protects the products with an oxygen, mineral oil and grease barrier. 

The start-up nucao from Leipzig, Germany, has been the first chocolate manufacturer on the market to use a new technology for its chocolate products „nucao fruits“ and „nucao nuts“ since the end of 2022. The products from nucao are vegan and made from organic ingredients and fair trade cocoa from organic farming, as well as being packaged in environmentally friendly packaging. With every product sold also supports reforestation projects in Nepal and Madagascar. The B Corp-certified start-up donates 3 per cent of its turnover to its reforestation partner Eden Reforestation Projects. So far, 14 million trees have already been planted.

At the beginning of 2021, Koehler Paper launched Koehler NexPlus Seal, a secondary packaging that has since been used by numerous brand owners. The latest innovation, Koehler NexPlus Advanced, is the consistent further development of the barrier concept to replace plastic as a packaging material where it makes sense. With its oxygen, mineral oil and grease barrier, Koehler NexPlus Advanced is suitable for direct food contact. It has a Good printability in gravure, flexo and digital printing, which is important for product communication to the end consumer. Compared to conventional plastic packaging, flexible paper packaging reduces CO2-footprint and also provide a positive image transfer to the product and company brand. With Koehler NexPlus Advanced, the packaging for nucao „Fruits & Nuts“ is made of 100 per cent paper and can be disposed of as waste paper after use become. 

„After extensive tests, we decided in favour of Koehler NexPlus Advanced 75 g. In addition to product protection, which was assessed via storage tests with subsequent sensory evaluation, recyclability in the paper recycling stream was an important factor. It was also important for us that the environmental service provider Interseroh rated the product with 19 out of 20 points.“

Brand manufacturers and packers have Conversion to recyclable paper packaging not expected to involve significant investment costs in most cases. Christoph Wachter adds: „It is often sufficient to adjust a few parameters on existing packaging machines in order to optimise sealing temperatures or sealing times, for example. But these are all measures that are manageable.“
